T his board is designed to allow the user to evaluate  
the performance of the ADF4106 Frequency Synthe-  
sizer for PLL's (Phase Locked Loops). T he block  
diagram of the board is shown below. It contains the  
ADF4153 synthesizer, a pc connector, 10MH z  
T CXO for the reference input, SMA connectors for  
the power supplies and RF output. T here is also a low  
pass loop filter (20kHz) and a VCO (Vaari-L  
VCO190-1750T ) on board. T he eval board is setup  
for a 10MHz PFD comparison frequency. A cable is  
included with the board to connect to a pc printer  
port.  
T he package also contains windows software to allow  
easy programming of the synthesizer.

Loop F ilter C om pon en ts:  
T he evaluation board comes with a cable for connecting to  
the printer port of a PC. T he silk screen and cable diagram for  
the evaluation board are shown below. T he board schematic is  
shown on pages 3 and 4.  
Loop component values shown in the circuit diagram are  
for 1.75GHz RF output, 2.5mA CP current, VCO190-  
1750T VCO, 10MH z PFD frequency, 20kH z loop  
bandwidth, phase margin = 45 degrees. N = 175.  
On the evaluation kit CD is a copy of ADIsimPLL  
software. T his allows the user to create new filter designs  
and model the frequency and time domain responsees of  
these loops. It also has a useful report and schematic  
option.

T he board is powered from a single 9V battery. T he  
power supply ciruitry allows the user to choose 3V for the  
ADF4153 VDD and either 3V or 5V for the ADF4106 VP,  
and for the VCO supply. T he default settings are 3V for  
the ADF4153 VDD and 5V for the ADF4153 VP and for  
the VCO supply. It is ver y im por tant to note that the  
AD F4153VD D should never exceed the AD F4153 VP . This  
can dam age the device.  
All components necessary for LO generation are catered  
for on-board. T he 10MHz T CXO from Fox provides the  
necessary Reference Input. T he PLL is made up of the  
ADF4153, passive loop filter (20kH z) and the VCO190-  
1750T VCO from Vari-L. T he output is available at  
RFOUT through a standard SMA connector. If the user  
wishes they may use their own power supplies and refer-  
ence input. In this case, they need to insert SMA connec-  
tors to as shown on the silkscreen and block diagram.

T o change RF VCO Output Frequency and/or channel  
spacing, click on the text of the RF VCO Output  
Frequency. T he Output Frequency window will appear.  
Click on Charge Pump Current Setting and the Current  
Setting window will appear. Grab the pointer to set the  
Charge Pump Current Setting. Click OK.  
Softwa r e D escr ip tion  
T he software comes on a CD. If the user double clicks on  
“setup.exe”, then the install wizard installs the software.  
Follow the on-screen directions. T he software will be  
installed in a default directory called “C:/Program Files/  
Analog Devices/ADF_Frac”. T o run the software, click  
on AD F _F rac_Rev2.exe.  
Before the main software screen appears, the Device win-  
dow appears, which will ask the user to choose which de-  
vice is being evaluated. Choose the ADF4153 and click  
O K .  
T he Main Interface window will now appear. (See Figure  
5)  
Click on Update All registers. T he data is now set up, and  
other features can now be examined by the user.
