DESCRIPTION
The LM78XX series of three terminal regulators is available with several fixed output voltages making them
useful in a wide range of applications. One of these is local on card regulation, eliminating the distribution
problems associated with single point regulation. The voltages available allow these regulators to be used in
logic systems, instrumentation, HiFi, and other solid state electronic equipment. Although designed primarily as
fixed voltage regulators these devices can be used with external components to obtain adjustable voltages and
currents.
The LM78XX series is available in an aluminum TO-3 package which will allow over 1.0A load current if
adequate heat sinking is provided. Current limiting is included to limit the peak output current to a safe value.
Safe area protection for the output transistor is provided to limit internal power dissipation. If internal power
dissipation becomes too high for the heat sinking provided, the thermal shutdown circuit takes over preventing
the IC from overheating.
Considerable effort was expanded to make the LM78XX series of regulators easy to use and minimize the
number of external components. It is not necessary to bypass the output, although this does improve transient
response. Input bypassing is needed only if the regulator is located far from the filter capacitor of the power
supply.
For output voltage other than 5V, 12V and 15V the LM117 series provides an output voltage range from 1.2V to
57V.

(1) All characteristics are measured with capacitor across the input of 0.22 μF, and a capacitor across the output of 0.1μF. All
characteristics except noise voltage and ripple rejection ratio are measured using pulse techniques (tw ≤ 10 ms, duty cycle ≤ 5%).
Output voltage changes due to changes in internal temperature must be taken into account separately.

harm and take appropriate remedial actions. Buyer will fully indemnify TI and its representatives against any damages arising out of the use
of any TI components in safety-critical applications.
In some cases, TI components may be promoted specifically to facilitate safety-related applications. With such components, TI’s goal is to
help enable customers to design and create their own end-product solutions that meet applicable functional safety standards and
requirements. Nonetheless, such components are subject to these terms.
No TI components are authorized for use in FDA Class III (or similar life-critical medical equipment) unless authorized officers of the parties
have executed a special agreement specifically governing such use.
Only those TI components which TI has specifically designated as military grade or “enhanced plastic” are designed and intended for use in
military/aerospace applications or environments. Buyer acknowledges and agrees that any military or aerospace use of TI components
which have not been so designated is solely at the Buyer's risk, and that Buyer is solely responsible for compliance with all legal and
regulatory requirements in connection with such use.
TI has specifically designated certain components which meet ISO/TS16949 requirements, mainly for automotive use. Components which
have not been so designated are neither designed nor intended for automotive use; and TI will not be responsible for any failure of such
components to meet such requirements.
