4x pulses are triggered with each rising or
fallingedgeofAorBchannel;hencetheirfre-
quencyisfourtimesthefrequencyofAorB.

PR5201 uses a reference photodiode to
measuretheilluminanceonthechip.
INCREASINGTHELEDCURRENT
Throughtheintegratedlinearcurrentregulator,
this signal can be used to control the LED
currenttobeattheminimumlevelneededfor
properoperation,independentofLEDageing.
TheLEDcurrentneededdependsontheLED
beam diameter, efficiency, wavelength, and
other parameters. Typically LED currents of
5...12mAwillsufficeforahigh-efficiencyLED
with4mmbeamdiameter.

TheAlarmpingoesHiiftheilluminanceofthe
Refphotodiodefallsbelowathreshold.
Thethresholdcanbeinfluencedbythewidthof
anapertureovertheRefdiode,whichispartof
thereticlemountedontopofthepackage.
TheLEDsignalishighaslongasthefailure
conditionpersists.
TheAlarmsignalcanbeusedinconnectionwith
theinternalLEDcurrentregulationorwithfixed

Especially at low supply voltage and when
using LEDs with high forward voltage, the
currentdrivenbyPR5201maybeinsufficient.
