Description
Intended Use
Features
The PSR-PS21 SIL coupling relay can be used for power
adaptation and electrical isolation in high and low-demand
applications up to SIL 2 according to IEC 61508 as well as
EN 61511.
Using this module, circuits are interrupted in a safety-ori-
ented manner.
The safety relay is equipped with an enabling current path
and a confirmation current path that drop out without delay
according to stop category 0 in accordance with
EN 60204-1.
By filtering the controller test pulses, premature failure of the
safety relays is prevented.
SIL 2 coupling relay for safety-related switching off
Can be used in high and low-demand applications
Approved for Class I, Zone 2 applications
Easy proof test:
- Active error acknowledgment via A1
- Visually on the device
- Evaluation of the force-guided N/C contact
Integrated DCS test pulse filter
Low inrush current
1 undelayed enabling current path
1 undelayed confirmation current path
1 digital signal output
Fixed screw connection
6.8 mm housing width
Controller-specific Termination Carrier available on re-
quest
If an error occurs inside the module, the internal device input
impedance is affected. As such with compatible, safe sys-
tems, the test pulses sent from the controller may be dis-
rupted and the error can be reported back to the corre-
sponding digital output without any additional wiring effort.
WARNING: Risk of electric shock
Observe the safety instructions in the corresponding section!
Make sure you always use the latest documentation.
It can be downloaded from the product at phoenixcontact.net/products.

Safety notes
WARNING: danger due to magnetic inter-
ference!
Do not use the device in the vicinity of strong
magnetic fields (e.g., caused by transformers
or magnetic iron). The magnetic field strength
of the environment must not exceed 30 A/m.
WARNING: Risk of electric shock
During operation, parts of electrical switching
devices carry hazardous voltages.
Before working on the switching device, dis-
connect the power.
Please observe the safety regulations of elec-
trical engineering and industrial safety and lia-
bility associations!
Disregarding these safety regulations may re-
sult in death, serious personal injury or dam-
age to equipment.
Startup, mounting, modifications, and up-
grades should only be carried out by a skilled
electrical engineer!
NOTE: Risk of damage to equipment due
to noise emissions
When operating relay modules the operator
must meet the requirements for noise emis-
sion for electrical and electronic equipment
(EN 61000-6-4) on the contact side and, if re-
quired, take appropriate measures.
NOTE: Risk of damage to equipment due
to noise emissions
WARNING: Risk of automatic machine re-
start!
For emergency stop applications, the ma-
chine must be prevented from restarting auto-
matically by a higher-level control system.
This is a Class A product. In a domestic envi-
ronment it may cause radion inteference, in
which case the user may be required to take
adequate measures.
Only use power supply units with safe isola-
tion and SELV / PELV in accordance with EN
50178/VDE 0160 (SELV / PELV).
Protective covers must not be removed when
operating electrical switching devices.
WARNING: Danger due to faulty devices!
NOTE: Electrostatic discharge!
The devices may be damaged following an er-
ror and correct operation can no longer be en-
sured.
In the event of an error, replace the device im-
mediately.
Repairs to the device, especially if the hous-
ing must be opened, may only be carried out
by the manufacturer or authorized persons.
Otherwise the warranty is invalidated.
The device contains components that can be
damaged or destroyed by electrostatic dis-
charge. When handling the device, observe
the necessary safety precautions against
electrostatic discharge (ESD) according to
EN 61340-5-1 and EN 61340-5-2.
WARNING: Risk due to incorrect installa-
tion
For reliable operation, the safety relay must
be installed in housing protected from dust
and humidity (IP54).
Carry out wiring according to the application.
Refer to the “Application examples” section
for this.
WARNING: Risk due to welded relay con-
tacts
A suitable and effective protective circuit is to
be provided for inductive loads. This is to be
implemented parallel to the load and not par-
allel to the switch contact.

WARNING: Explosion hazard
The device is not designed for use in atmo-
spheres with a danger of dust explosions.
When installing and connecting the supply
and signal circuits observe the requirements
of EN/ IEC 60079-14. Only devices suitable
for operation in Ex zone 2 and the conditions
at the application site may be connected to
the circuits in zone 2.
In potentially explosive areas, only connect
and disconnect cables when the power is dis-
connected.

Mount the module on a 35 mm DIN rail according to
EN 60715.
In the proof test, you check the individual relay channels.
1. Deactivate A1/A2.
2. Apply the 24 V DC diagnosis power supply to con-
tact 21.
If the green DGN-LED lights up, the module is functional.
(Apply 24 V DC to signal output M1.)
If the red ERR LED lights up, replace the module.
(Apply 0 V DC to signal output M1. Error acknowledgment
via A1 is inactive.)
