Description
The AC48116A-C is a complete DSP solution for high-density, carrier class Voice over IP gateways
or Voice over ATM access and edge switching products.

The AC48116A-C supports up to 16 non compressed full-duplex Voice over Packet Network
channels. The device combines toll quality PCM or ADPCM coding with long tail echo cancellation
and high quality DTMF detection and generation. Fax or modem transmissions are passed
transparently (in PCM) by the device with no performance degradation.

Running m/A-law G.711 codec, the AC48116AC provides a tradeoff between the number of
channels and the echo canceller tail length: 16 channels with 15ms tail length, 12 channels with
25ms tail length, 8 channels with 50ms tail length or 6 channels with 60ms tail length.
For high-quality, "light" compression requirements, the chip supports 6 channels of G.726 (32 kbps
ADPCM) codec. An adaptive, G.168 compliant echo canceler and a high quality DTMF and Tone
Signaling detector and generator constitutes the ideal voice processing system on chip.
Edge Switching Equipment
The AC48116A-C transforms the digitized signals into packets, ready to be transported over packet
networks such as IP, Frame Relay or ATM. Integrating the AC48116A-C into the user's application
is facilitated by a hardware application note and by host CPU drivers supplied by AudioCodes.

Functional Description
Overview
The AC48116A-C receives the digitized voice
samples through the PCM interface, applies
G.711 or G.726 encoding and transmits the
packetized voice, fax or data signals to the host
processor through the DSP Host Port Interface (HPI).
The voice receive and transmit operations are
performed simultaneously. The packetized
voice/fax/data frames are received from the host,
converted to 64 kbps m/A-law PCM bit streams
and played out to a time division multiplexed
PCM highway. The packets received from the
network are stored in an on-chip adaptive
de-jitter buffer, that accommodates the delay
variation and allows for a smooth play out of the
analog signals.

Both real-time packet exchange, control & status
communication, are performed through the
8-bit Parallel Interface. The Host processor controls
the AC48116A-C by writing control and reading
status information from the command/status
buffer in the HPI. Outgoing packets from the DSP
are periodic and timed either by a DSP interrupt or
by host polling. Packets from the network can be
written by the host to the DSP in arbitrary timing
depending on their time of arrival. The host-DSP
packet exchange protocol has been optimized to
allow efficient transfer of multiple voice channel
packets with a minimum overhead.

AudioCodes provides a high level, ANSI-C source
code driver for the host CPU, for download,
control and monitoring of the AC48116A-C. The
AC48116A-C object code is downloaded to the
device by the host CPU prior to start of operation,
and it is fully field upgradeable.
