HB brackets are used with PL or PLA end caps. The bracket is assembled to the motor or any suitable surface by two screws in line at any convenient position within
the center-to-center dimension (C) shown in the chart. The PL end cap is placed in position and the entire assemby snapped into place with the connecting wires
brought through the bracket hole. Use PLA style caps if the wire is to be direced away from the bracket. (Example: PLA3).
End caps and brackets are shipped loose and should be ordered separately.
Contact the factory for information about wire leads and sub-assemblies.

ꢂ The number of starts shown are reduced starts for accelerated
testing so that test time does not exceed 35 days. Type 1 capaci-
tors should be capable of 75,000 starts for ratings to 125 volts
and 40,000 starts for higher voltages. See section 3.0 for testing
procedures.
If an application exceeds the duty cycles in Figure B, other meth-
ods of capacitor selection must be used, Contact Mallory for
assistance.
1.1 VOLTAGE RATING
1.2 CAPACITANCE RATING
The rated voltage of the capacitor must be greater than or equal
to the average voltage across the capacitor terminals during the
motor starting cycle. This is not necessarily the same as the mo-
tor line voltage. In addition, the cutoff voltage rating of the ca-
pacitor must be greater than or equal to the maximum voltage
attained across the terminals of the capacitor in actual service.
The maximum recommended cut-off voltages for the seven stan-
dard voltage ratings are as follows:
The capacitance is chosen to give the necessary starting torque
to the motor. The minimum capacitance value is the minimum
designed capacitance. The maximum capacitance is 20% more
than that value.
1.3 DUTY CYCLE
The duty cycle should be calculated for each application. It is the
ratio of the time the capacitor is on voltage to the total time of one
cycle. The duty cycles for the normal performance of Type 2
(MSA) capacitors are listed in Figure A. Mallory Type MSA
capacitors may be used in any intermittant application within their
temperature and voltage range where the duty cycle does not ex-
ceed that listed in the table in Figure A. This is in accordance
with the standards in EIA-463-B for Type 2 capacitors.
If a particular application exceeds the normal duty cycle, but does
not exceed the values listed in Figure B, an extra performance or
Type 1 (MSB) capacitor is required.

1.7 SAFETY
These capacitors are engineered for 60 Hz application but may Because the watt-second value of these capacitors is high, pre-
be operated between 47 Hz and 60 Hz without damage provided cautions should be taken during the testing and application of
voltage limitations stated above are observed. For other varia- these devices.
tions in frequency, contact Mallory.
Discharge resistors should be specified when there is a possibil-
ity of a residual charge left on the capacitor or to protect contacts.
Mis-application, such as exceeding design limits or applying
continuous AC voltage, may result in destruction or explo-
sion of capacitors.
1.5 MOUNTING
Vertical mounting of the capacitor with the terminals up is
recommended. However, horizontal mounting is acceptable pro-
viding the vent is located in the up position. Vertical mounting
with the terminals down is not recommended because the capaci-
tor life may be reduced and the operation of the pressure relief
vent impaired.
1.6 SOLVENTS
Solvent residues on the capacitors after cleaning may penetrate
the seal and cause internal corrosion resulting in shortened life.
Alcohol or water detergent cleaning is not usually harmful but
halogenated cleaning solvents are not recommended and should
be avoided.
Procedure for Capacitance and Power Factor Measurement
Type MS motor start capacitors are intended for intermittent duty application. The capacitance and power factor should be measured
by a Power Analyzer or referenced to the voltmeter, ammeter and wattmeter (impedance) method described as follows.
Capacitance is calculated by the following formula
when frequency is 60 Hertz.
Switch
I
W
2652 x Amps
Capacitance (ꢃF) =
Rated (Applied) Volts
Capacitor

Line

Power factor is calculated as follows:
Watts
% Power factor =
x 100
Volts x Amps
WARNING: Voltage should not be applied for more than 4 seconds to prevent over-heating of the capacitor
and incorrect measurements. Test with capacitor in upright position (contacts up) to allow proper function-
ing of safety vent. Over heating of any capacitor may result in sudden expulsion of hot flammable material.
Enclose the capacitor under test to prevent injury to persons in the event of abnormal capacitor failure.
All measurements are referenced to 25ꢀC (77ꢀF). Capacitors just brought in from the cold or recently tested (hot) must be allowed
to stabilize to room temperature (3-4 hours)
Other methods of capacitance and power factor measurement may result in erroneous readings.

continuously to a capacitor. Care should be taken to shield the
capacitor from observers to prevent injury.
